Protection and Symptoms

How do I keep myself from getting Lyme Disease?
How do I know if I have it?

5 Tips to keep in mind for protection...

1. Tuck your pants into long socks.

This will keep ticks from crawling up your pants and onto your leg.

2. Wear light colored clothing.

This will make it easier to see the ticks

3. If possible, stay away from tall grass.

When adult ticks are trying to find a host, they climb to the top of tall plants and grasses so they can easily grab ahold of a tall mammal. Keep away from tall grasses to avoid making yourself a tick's host!
4. Check yourself for ticks when you get back and shower thoroughly.
5. Wear bug spray with DEET!
4 and 5 are the most important, yet the most skipped steps--bug spray is the best way to keep yourself safe and it is absolutely necessary to ensure that no ticks have found their way to your body.

Symptoms

The most obvious symptom for Lyme Disease is the unique bulls-eye rash that develops around a tick bite. This will look like a small red dot where the tick bite is, surrounded by a large red ring. Looking for the formation of this rash is the easiest sign to see when you are checking for symptoms. Other symptoms include mild headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. If you feel any of these 24 hours after you have been outside, make sure you check for a bulls-eye rash or see your doctor for more help.
